"You give them something to eat"
Addressing spiritual starvation

Doing something beautiful for God

During one of our previous discussions, we talked about the group doing something special for God, and used the example of the poor widow who put two small coins into the temple treasury. In the eyes of the world her contribution didn't seem to amount to much, but in the eyes of God it was extraordinary because she gave all she had.

A number of the group's members had talked about volunteering a day at a soup kitchen. We had looked into a few of the local kitchens and ran into some logistical difficulties given the size of the group. It struck me that maybe their inspiration pertained more to a spiritual rather than a physical hunger. Your peers out there are starving for the truth regarding faith and sexual morality. When Jason Evert came here a couple of years ago and spoke to the local high school's classes, the kids lined up for 8 hours afterwards to talk to him. Virtually all those who talked to him were living unchaste lives and may have laughed off the topic of the school's assembly that morning. But when they were exposed to the truth given to them from a young man they could relate to, it hit home and they were literally starving for more.

You remember when Jesus was preaching out in the countryside to some 5,000 people and his disciples said it was getting late and they should send these people away so they can get something to eat. And Jesus said, "You give them something to eat."

He says this to you too. What should you do with all your peers who are starving for the truth? Send them to California to hear Jason Evert, or to CCD? You give them something to eat. The disciples only had a few fish and some loaves, but they brought what they had to Jesus and He worked the miracle. Like the poor widow, they gave Him all they had.

What can you give? Give your presence, your witness. You may feel powerless to change the cultural atmosphere amongst your peers, but bring whatever you have and give it all to Jesus. Share your committments to chastity, true friendships and real love. Let them see how your faith brings you happiness and hope.

If you can give that, Our Lord can do the rest. During our next meeting, we'll be taping any of you who would like to participate in a statement from the group to other teens out there, focused on chastity. We'll create a short movie to have on the website and try to get other teen groups to see it and if they agree to sign a petition at the end reinforcing solidarity among teenagers of faith. Such solidarity in and of itself can help open doors to teenagers who might otherwise feel compelled to go along with amoral peer pressure.
